Abia State Govt Holds Leadership Training for Disability Community.

The Chairman of Abia State Disability Commission, Mr, David Anyaele has called on the Leaders of organisations of persons with disabilities to take advantage of the leadership training to define their vision and direction by identifying low hanging fruits that will lead efforts in the right path for the attainment of a common goal.

Mr David made the call on Monday while declaring open a two day Leadership Training for Persons with Disabilities in Abia State held in Umuahia.

Mr Anyaele said the training is an opportunity to for the participants to acquire skills necessary to equip, inspire and motivate their members, fostering a positive environment and encouraging productivity and goal oriented teams.

He strongly requested them to take advantage of the training to gain knowledge to improve their membership engagement, listening skills and recognize their team members’ contributions, membership satisfaction and reduce infighting as they will not be in a leadership position forever.

He thanked Governor, Alex Otti for his continued support to the commission to ensure that this training comes to fruition.

The commission chairman identified that Governor Otti places recognition, and prioritizes inclusion and participation of persons with disabilities in leadership positions.

He observed that this is evident in his appointment of six persons with different forms of disability in his administration among other recognitions accorded to them.

He said that Governor Alex Otti’s leadership values are centred around putting the people first, ensuring that the citizens of Abia State are at the forefront of every decision and action taken by his administration, in particular Abians with disabilities, thereby taking steps in the restoration of the moral compass of the society, promoting honesty, hard work and excellent virtues that have been lost over the years because of bad leaders.

David disclosed that their objectives are to strengthen the capacity of leaders of organizations of persons with disabilities in Abia State to respond to the needs of the cluster groups, position organizations of persons with disabilities in Abia State to attract local and international support for their activities, and reduce infighting and anti organisational activities among leaders of organisations of persons with disabilities in Abia State.

In a paper presentation, a resource person from Lagos, Mr Adegbemi King spoke on the topic, “leadership”.

He described leadership as a learnable skill anybody can acquire.

Mr King said the purpose of the training is for the leaders of various associations in disability community to improve their leadership and organisations they belong.

He charged the participants to be committed with their tasks, stressing that a focused leader has a direction to go.

Mr Adegbemi King also charged leaders and those aspiring to be leaders to be careful of influence because some influences can be negative.

According to him, most corporate organisations today overmanaged and under led. He disclosed that this leads to enormous wastage of resources, deep inefficiencies and unlimited frustration.

He also advised them to have set goals which helps to refine them, as well as makes them to have focuse.

Mr King further stated that leadership is an ability to inspire, guide, and influence others toward achieving a common goal.

‘the training is a win win for the state, this training will help leaders of the disabilities defend themselves and request for what is due for them, not violently”.

The training attracted the leaders of various disabilities associations including the state chairman of spinal cord injury association of Nigeria, David Onuoha, as well as the director of admnistration, disability commission, Mrs Nne Ralph.
