A kidney specialist from Abia State specialist hospital and diagnostic centre Umuahia, Dr Wugo Olivia Alozie has advised people to embtace periodic check up of their kidneys to prevent crisis.
Dr Alozie gave the advice while interacting with our correspondent in Umuahia today to mark this year’s World Kidney Day on the theme, “Are your kidneys okay? Detect early, protect kidney health. World kidney day is a global event.
Observed annually on the second Thursday of March, World Kidney Day is a global initiative dedicated to raising awareness about kidney health and advocating for preventive measures against kidney disease.
In 2025, this important day falls on March 13 (today), spotlighting the theme: “Are Your Kidneys OK? Detect Early, Protect Kidney Health.”
This year’s theme underscores the vital role of early detection and intervention in preventing kidney disease and its severe complications.
Dr Alozie who spoke on behalf of their Chief medical director, Dr Chimezie Okwuonu said the celebration was designed to raise awareness on the vital role of the kidneys in people’s overall health.

According her, in line with the theme, the state government organised a free screening for Abians as part of activities of the specialist hospital and diagnostic centre giving individuals opportunity to check the health staus of their kidneys.
She listed the risk factors of kidney diesease to include long standing hypertension that is not well controlled, alcohol, local concoction, obesity, diabetes, saying that kidney diesease also runs in some families.
She maintained that regular check of the BP helps to avoid kidney disease and encouraged people to do exercise, eat good diets among others.
Dr Wugo Olivia Alozie added that early detected of kidney challenge helps in delaying progression of the diesease and wholistic management of the condition.
She strongly warned people to be health conscious even with their diets and do regular exercuse.
