As the world celebrates World Earth Day, 2025, the Nigeria Environmental Society (NES), Abia State Chapter, has emphasized the urgent need for collective action to build a sustainable future powered by renewable energy. This call aligns with the global drive to combat climate change, reduce environmental degradation, and ensure a healthier planet for future generations.
World Earth Day, observed annually on April 22, is a global event dedicated to promoting environmental protection and raising awareness about pressing ecological issues. This year’s celebration is anchored on “Accelerating the Transition to Renewable Energy,” with the theme “Our Power,Our Planet” a timely and crucial focus in light of the escalating climate crisis.

Speaking at the event held at Okigwe Park, Umuahia, the Chairman of NES Abia State Chapter, Mrs. GeraldKanu Cyrina, stressed the importance of moving away from fossil fuels and embracing renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, and tidal power. She emphasized that the theme highlights the urgent need to transition to clean energy to combat the adverse effects of climate change and environmental pollution.
“We must work together to promote sustainable development, protect biodiversity, and mitigate climate change,” Cyrina said. “This can be achieved by investing in renewable energy technologies, reducing carbon footprints, minimizing waste, and adopting environmentally friendly practices at individual and institutional levels.”
In a brief speech, Dr (Lady) Eberechi Cecilia Osuagwu from Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), and the PRO of NES Abia Chapter reiterated the importance of stakeholder collaboration in achieving a sustainable energy future. She urged participants to support tree-planting initiatives, reduce dependence on non-renewable energy, and become advocates for environmental sustainability within their communities.
Delivering a lecture titled “Transition to Renewable Energy,” Prof. Anthony Nlewedim, represented by Dr. Uchendu Udochukwuka highlighted the environmental hazards posed by continued reliance on fossil fuels. He advocated for a shift in mindset and policy towards cleaner energy alternatives and sustainable living practices.
In another insightful presentation titled “Awareness on Environmental Protection,” Mr. Edward Shadrach Uchenna underscored the critical need for environmental preservation. He encouraged the public to plant more trees, avoid indiscriminate waste disposal, and maintain clean surroundings to foster a healthier ecosystem.
Adding his voice to the occasion, Chief Emenike Agwu reminded the audience that the environment is a shared responsibility and that every citizen has a role to play in protecting the planet. “The Earth belongs to all of us. Let us not destroy what sustains us,” he said.
In his closing remarks, the Chapter Secretary, Barr. Ifeanyi Olunkwa, commended the collaborative efforts of various organizations and stakeholders that contributed to the success of the event. He noted that such partnerships are essential for scaling up environmental awareness and action.
Responding on behalf of the park leadership, Mr. Chukwuemeka Odum, representing the Chairman of the Motor Park, Comrade Victor Nwacham, expressed appreciation to NES for bringing what he described as “The Gospel of Truth”—a message centered on environmental responsibility and human wellness.
A local trader, Mr. Ubadire Onuoha, also praised the initiative, describing the event as both informative and enlightening. “I’ve learned so much today about renewable energy and how my actions impact the environment,” he remarked.
The event featured activities such as informative radio talks, awareness jingles, and a road walk campaign to draw public attention to the importance of environmental protection._
It was attended by representatives from Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA), the Abia State Ministry of Environment, National Road Transport Workers, Market Associations, and other Civil Society groups.
The event concluded with a resounding call to action, urging individuals, organizations, and governments to rise to the challenge of environmental stewardship and to work collectively toward building a sustainable, green future powered by renewable energy.
