ASEPA DGM Condemns Attack on Monitoring Officer, Calls for Public Support for Environmental Enforcement

The Deputy General Manager of the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA) in charge of Umuahia Zone, Catechist Ambrose Jonah, has strongly condemned the violent attack on a member of the agency’s monitoring team while on duty on Saturday in Umuahia.

Speaking during a press briefing in his office, Jonah described the incident as unfortunate and unacceptable, stressing that no level of provocation justifies violence.

He specifically condemned the use of a cutlass in the attack, noting that the suspect, popularly known as “De Senator,” was among the team disbanded
and had no justification for his actions. Jonah expressed gratitude that no life was lost in the incident and disclosed that he personally ensured the victim received medical treatment. According to him, the injured officer has undergone surgery, the hospital bills have been paid, and his condition is improving, while the victim and four others were cooling off in police custody.

He explained that enforcement duties often attract resistance because many people dislike regulations and lawful oversight.

“Anything that has to do with enforcement attracts hostility. People prefer lawlessness, and that is why agencies like ASEPA, the police, and other enforcement bodies often face opposition,” he said.

The ASEPA official revealed that the agency’s monitoring team in the Umuahia Zone had earlier been disbanded due to allegations of extortion, with only a small number of vetted personnel retained to assist in operations.

He clarified that ASEPA does not operate with weapons and has no dangerous tools in its possession, describing the attack as an isolated act by an individual who intervened in an ongoing disagreement between residents and agency officials.

Jonah said the matter has been handed over to the police for investigation, adding that several suspects are currently in custody. He noted that ASEPA has continued to collaborate with security agencies to ensure the safety of its personnel during enforcement operations.

He also lamented the frequent attacks on street sweepers, particularly women, who are often assaulted while performing their duties. According to him, the agency has consistently engaged in public sensitisation through radio and other platforms to promote environmental responsibility.

The leader of ASEPA umuahia zone interim monitoring team, Ogechi Nwokoma was present when Jonah further disclosed that the agency is working with mobile courts in Umuahia and other locations to strengthen enforcement of environmental laws, noting that effective prosecution would serve as a deterrent to offenders.

Jonah urged residents of Abia State to support ASEPA’s efforts, stressing that environmental cleanliness is a collective responsibility. “ASEPA is working for the good of everyone. A clean environment brings glory to Abia State and benefits all residents,” he said.

He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to non-violence, professionalism, and improved operational strategies, while appealing to the public to cooperate with environmental officials in the interest of peace, safety, and sustainable urban development.
