Medical doctors in both private and public facilities in Abia state have been charged to embark on every Tuesday strike as a solidarity to doctors that are being owe salaries.
The Chairman Nigerian Medical Association Abia state, chapter, Dr Chimezie Okwuonu said this during a Press briefing in Umuahia.
According to him, the decision was made during their Annual Delegate Meeting and general conference of the Nigerian Medical Association, held in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State from 15th to 22nd May 2022, where the Association observed that Medical Doctors in Abia State University Teaching Hospital Aba are owed salary up to 25 months while those in the Hospital Management Board Abia State are owed 11 months arrears.
Okwuonu stressed that efforts made by both the National body and the State Chapter of NMA to resolve the matter did not yield any positive result, hence, the meeting directed that all Medical Doctors in Abia State in both private and public institutions should proceed on every Tuesday strike action.
He therefore called on the State Government to speedily action to the request of offsetting the perennial salary arrears of the Medical Doctors in Abia State specifically in Abia State University Teaching Hospital, ABSUTH and Hospital Management Board, HMB and set the stage for robust health care delivery which the state was once known for.
Doctor Okwuonu further urged doctors to get their permanent voter cards, PVCs, to enable them participate during the forthcoming general elections
