By Steve Oko

The Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 9 Headquarters, Umuahia, Kanayo Uzuegbu, has issued a stern warning to criminal elements within the zone, vowing to invoke the full force of the law against anyone found disrupting public peace.

AIG Uzuegbu gave the warning while receiving the newly elected leadership of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Abia State, led by its Chairman, Deacon Steve Oko.

He emphasized that the Zone 9 Command maintains a zero-tolerance stance on crime and lawlessness, stressing that no part of the zone would be allowed to serve as a haven for criminal activities.

The police chief assured residents of continued safety and security, particularly as the Christmas and New Year festivities approach, adding that security agencies would sustain robust collaboration to protect lives and property.

Uzuegbu, however, appealed to citizens to assist security operatives by providing credible information that could aid in tracking down criminals.

Describing journalists as critical partners in nation-building, the AIG urged media practitioners to embrace ethical and developmental journalism that promotes peace and unity. He pledged the readiness of the Zone 9 Command to work harmoniously with the press in advancing public safety and progress.

He further advised journalists to uphold objectivity, shun fake news, and avoid sensational reporting that could incite unrest.

In his remarks, the Correspondents’ Chapel Chairman, Deacon Oko, said the visit was aimed at fostering a closer working relationship between the police and journalists.

He called on the police to view the media as allies in progress rather than adversaries, noting that journalists have a constitutional duty to hold leaders accountable while supporting efforts to build a safer society.

Oko commended the police for their dedication to safeguarding lives and property but urged officers, especially those at checkpoints, to remain vigilant and professional while on duty. He also appealed to the police authorities to curb unprofessional conduct among officers to enhance the Force’s public image.

Other members of the Correspondents’ Chapel executive and stakeholders were present during the courtesy visit.
