As part of his efforts to prevent blindness in the society, over two thousand people across Abia and the south east have benefited from free eye treatment courtesy of the Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Rt Hon Benjamin Kalu.
The CEO of Visions Saver Eye Care Limited, business control project, Dr Kamal S.A. Umar Sarkin F.K Kano (Madawakin Gyade Bauchi ) said they attended to people that had Glaucoma, Trachoma and Cataracts eye problems.
Dr Kamal stated that receiving such free eye treatment was a huge relief and empowerment to beneficiries, adding that some of the patients had managed the diseases for more than ten to eleven years.
Speaking with newsmen at his country home Bende in Bende LGA of Abia State, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu said he organised the free eye medical outreach for people because many of them have suffered blindness due to scarcity of resources.
Kalu disclosed that God told him to identify with the physically challenged persons, as well as the elderly, pensioners to give them a sense of belonging, as he marked his 53rd birthday. He maintained that his political associates were ready to dine and wine with him in Abuja or any other luxury place in Nigeria, but he has to obey God’s directives.
According to him, the free eye treatment and the event was not done because of politics but to draw the downthroden closer to those in power. He commended his friends and well wishers across party lines who came to identify with him and his family.
While feeding some of the blind students from school for the blind Afara Umuahia, the Deputy Speaker promised to take the eye medical team to their school to see if some of them can regain their signt.
Ben Kalu also appreciated God almighty for showing him Mercy and pledged that going forward, he would be marking his birthday with the downthroden.
Kalu further urged Nigerians to sustain their trust with President Ahmed Bola Tinubu because he has good intentions for the country and the south east region.
The event attracted students from school for the blind Afara Umuahia, joint national association of persons with disabilities, Nigeria Union of Pensioners Abia State, orphanage homes, widows among others. They smiled home with bags of rice, cartons of tomatoes, spaghetti, groundnut oil, foams among other food items.
