The Abia State Government has taken delivery of two modern street sweepers described as the first of their kind in the state and the South-East to strengthen environmental sanitation efforts in Umuahia and beyond.
The equipment was received on behalf of the government by the Deputy General Manager in charge of the Umuahia Zone of the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA), Catechist Ambrose Jonah. The sweepers were donated by the Catholic Diocese of Umuahia under the leadership of the Bishop, Most Rev. Michael Kalu Ukpong.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Catechist Jonah said the machines would help extend cleaning operations to areas previously difficult to cover. He explained that the equipment was originally donated to the diocese by a Catholic benefactor based in Germany as a contribution toward environmental sustainability and public health. The diocese subsequently handed the machines over to the state government to support its sanitation drive.

Jonah noted that the donation reflects growing recognition of ongoing environmental reforms in Abia State, adding that many well-meaning Abians at home and in the diaspora are increasingly supporting government initiatives. He described the sweepers as a landmark development, stressing that such equipment had never been available in the state or across the South-East region.
He commended the Catholic Church for taking the lead in promoting environmental responsibility, pledging that ASEPA would ensure proper use and maintenance of the machines.
According to him, the agency remains committed to sustaining ongoing sanitation efforts and ensuring a cleaner environment for residents.
Presenting the sweepers after prayers, Bishop Ukpong explained that the diocese decided to donate the machines to the government to complement the efforts of Governor Alex Otti in promoting cleanliness and environmental order across Abia State. He emphasized that as “God’s Own State,” Abia must reflect cleanliness and orderliness, beginning with the state capital, Umuahia.

The Bishop expressed hope that the gesture would inspire more individuals and groups to partner with the government in keeping the state clean. He added that although Governor Otti was unable to attend the ceremony due to official engagements, he had been duly informed about the donation.
The sweepers were formally handed over to ASEPA for deployment across key areas, with expectations that they will enhance waste management operations and contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment across the state.
