For the very first time in Nigeria, a social and special program bringing together couples with disabilities were held in Umuahia, Abia State on the 14th of February, 2024 at Kolping Society Event Center.
The initiative was designed to bridge the gap/stigma that exists in our society towards persons with disabilities. To inspire in them a sense of hope, belonging, and fulfillment, and to encourage and strengthen their resolve to succeed in their marital lives.
This exciting journey was embarked upon to demonstrate love and affection towards our sisters and brothers with disabilities, and to remind them that they can enjoy their marriages, give birth to normal children, take care of their families, and raise responsible children despite their disability.
As such the event was intentionally executed on February 14th as part of our activities to celebrate this year’s Valentine compassionately promoting inclusion in our society.
The event which started at 2 pm featured various activities to spice up their day and marriages, and this included a dancing competition, inspirational and goodwill messages from GCC and other supporting organizations to the Couples, an exchange of gifts by the Couples, a Skills Exhibition, Comedy and the cutting of Valentine (Love) cake by the Couples and those born in February among others.
The initiative was a partnership effort by Global Compassion Coalition Nigeria, Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities ( JONAPWD), Abia State Chapter, and Another Chance International Vocational Center for Nigerians with Disabilities, and was supported by Bishop Dr. Sunday Ndukwo Onuoha of Vision Africa and Grand Patron, JONAPWD, Southeast Nigeria, Green Circuit Association International (GCAI), Help to the Helpless of Holy Ghost Day Bible Church, Mmesoma Foundation, Kolping Society, Resonance International Science School and Global Compassion Coalition (GCC Worldwide ).
The event had in attendance over 50 members and leaders from the Disability Community in Abia State and special representatives from the supporting organizations.
In his vote of thanks, Hon Wisdom Okechukwu Kalu, Leader of JONAPWD in Abia and Southeast Nigeria thanked GCC and all the organisations involved stressing that the event has further restored and strengthened their faith that a compassionate and inclusive society is possible.
