FENRAD Condemns Killing of Igwe Akuma Akwu, Demands Justice and Accountability

The Foundation for Environmental Rights Advocacy & Development (FENRAD), a human rights and public accountability watchdog, has strongly condemned the killing of Igwe Akuma Akwu, describing the incident as a grave violation of the fundamental right to life and a troubling reflection of the growing culture of violence and impunity in society.
FENRAD expressed deep concern that the deceased had, before his death, repeatedly raised alarm over threats to his life. According to the organisation, Igwe Akuma Akwu had publicly reported attacks on his person, property, and family, while also calling for protection and timely intervention by relevant authorities. These warnings, which were widely documented, constituted clear early warning signals that regrettably did not receive the urgent and decisive response expected from security institutions.
The organisation noted that the tragic killing highlights a systemic failure in the protection of citizens, particularly individuals who legitimately raise security concerns and exercise their right to freedom of expression. FENRAD stressed that when reported threats are ignored, perpetrators are emboldened, leaving innocent lives exposed to avoidable danger.
FENRAD further expressed alarm over the increasing pattern of violent attacks and rising intolerance within public and civic spaces across the country. It warned that such acts, when left unaddressed, erode public confidence in state institutions and weaken the rule of law.

FENRAD’s Calls to Action
In line with its mandate to promote human rights, accountability, and justice, FENRAD called for an immediate, thorough, and transparent investigation into the killing of Igwe Akuma Akwu by relevant security agencies. The organisation also demanded the arrest and prosecution of all individuals connected to the crime, without bias, fear, or favour.
Additionally, FENRAD urged a comprehensive review of security response mechanisms to reported threats and early warning signals, with a view to preventing a recurrence of similar tragedies. It also called for institutional accountability for any lapses or negligence that may have contributed to the failure to protect the deceased.
Conclusion
FENRAD maintained that justice for Igwe Akuma Akwu is not optional, but a constitutional and moral imperative. It warned that failure to ensure accountability in the case would only reinforce the dangerous perception that violence carries no consequences.
The organisation expressed solidarity with the family and community of the deceased and reaffirmed its commitment to sustained advocacy for justice, human rights protection, and an end to impunity.
“Rest in peace, Igwe Akuma Akwu. Justice must be served,” the statement concluded.
The statement was signed by Comrade Nelson Nnanna Nwafor, Executive Director, Foundation for Environmental Rights Advocacy & Development (FENRAD).
