Abia State Governor and Visitor to Abia State University (ABSU), Dr. Alex Otti, has equipped the College of Medicine and Health Sciences (CMHS), Aba campus, with a 500KVA transformer to end a decade-long reliance on generators.
Provost of the College, Prof. C. I. Kamanu, disclosed the development on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, noting that the new facility has already been energized, restoring steady electricity supply for academic and clinical activities.
“For the past 10 years, the entire College has been running on generators. Today, thanks to the Governor, we now have stable public power supply,” he said.
The Governor has also provided a solar-powered borehole with a tank stand to guarantee constant water supply for staff and students.
Prof. Kamanu further revealed that Otti has commenced the construction of a new Teaching Hospital Complex, while retrofitting the existing 40-year-old structure, to enhance healthcare delivery and the training of medical students.
On staffing, he confirmed the Governor’s approval for recruitment of additional personnel and praised his intervention in clearing salary arrears and ensuring regular payment of staff wages.
He recalled that the College had lost accreditation to train doctors before Otti assumed office but regained it under his administration, with the admission quota rising from 120 to 150 students.
Vice-Chancellor of ABSU, Prof. Ndukwe J. Okeudo, also lauded the Governor for his interventions, assuring that the Medical School would sustain excellence in training, research, and healthcare services.
