Ukaegbu Commends NURTW’s Peaceful Operations in Abia, Warns Drivers against Reckless Driving

The Abia State Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Chimezie Ukaegbu, has praised the National Union of Transport Workers (NURTW) in the state for its peaceful conduct, discipline, and orderly management of motor parks, describing the union as a critical partner in sustaining peace within the transport sector.

Dr. Ukaegbu gave the commendation on Thursday during the union’s end-of-year party and mega empowerment programme held at its headquarters in Ohiya Park, Umuahia, where over 500 bags of rice were distributed to members.

He lauded the leadership of the NURTW for its inclusive style of leadership, noting that carrying other transport unions along as the lead union has helped entrench peace and stability across motor parks in the state.

According to the Commissioner, the calm atmosphere currently enjoyed in Abia’s motor parks—now largely free from the clashes and violence that once characterized them—aligns with the Abia Serenity Agenda of Governor Alex Otti’s administration.

Dr. Ukaegbu expressed appreciation to the State Chairman of the union, Comrade Chukwuma Azode, for the NURTW’s consistent support for the state government, urging members to sustain their cooperation with the present administration.

He cautioned drivers against reckless driving, driving against traffic, and other unsafe practices capable of endangering lives, stressing that safety must remain a top priority in the transport sector.

The Commissioner noted that he was proud to have facilitated the return and proper engagement of the NURTW within the state’s transport framework, adding that the union has justified that decision through its conduct and commitment to peace.

He assured transport workers that the state government would continue to carry them along in policies and projects, including plans for electric buses, modern transport terminals, and water transportation, all of which would involve active union participation.

Commending the empowerment initiative, Dr. Ukaegbu described the distribution of over 500 bags of rice as a commendable act of leadership and compassion, noting that the gesture reflects Comrade Azode’s dedication to the welfare of union members.

In his remarks, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transport, Hon. Obioma Nwogbe, applauded the NURTW leadership for maintaining peace and discipline, describing the empowerment programme as timely and impactful.

Earlier, the State NURTW Chairman, Comrade Chukwuma Azode, thanked members for their good conduct and peaceful disposition throughout the year, explaining that the rice distribution was aimed at rewarding loyalty, encouraging unity, and reassuring members that their welfare remains a priority.

He appreciated the Commissioner for Transport for serving as a reliable bridge between the union and the state government and reaffirmed the union’s unwavering support for Governor Alex Otti’s administration.

Comrade Azode also commended the state government for improved road infrastructure, noting that better roads have eased transportation and reduced frequent vehicle breakdowns. He further praised the administration for strengthening security along highways and major routes, which he said has significantly reduced criminal activities and boosted public confidence.

The NURTW Chairman assured members that more welfare initiatives would follow to reward diligence and commitment. He urged members to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), emphasizing the importance of civic responsibility in good governance.

He also warned drivers against reckless driving, drinking and driving, and other forms of misconduct, while urging them to keep motor parks clean and continue to uphold peace and unity in line with the development vision of the Abia State Government.
