University Don calls for establishment of soil science clubs in public & private secondary schools

A university Don, Professor Demion Asawalam has made a case for the setting up of soil science clubs in public secondary and private schools in the country to enhance their knowledge on soil.

Speaking during a sensitization visits to schools in Umuahia the state capital, including lbeku High school, Ndume Otuka Community Secondary School and Mercy High school Ahiaeke, Professor Asawalam who is the southeast representative at the Nigerian institute of soil science said the exercise is necessary to increase the number of soil scientists in the conutry.

He maintained that the issue of food crisis will be adequately tackled if people have adequate knowledge of soil and it’s usage.

The university don called on the students to develop interest in soil science to enable them contribute in enhancing food production in the country through their expertise.

He described soil as important to Man’s development and survival, emphasizing that any nation that does not take advantage of it soil will be at the mercy of other countries.

Contributing, Professor Godwin Nnaji and Professor Rozata Eneje said the setting up of the soil science clubs in the schools will help to increase the knowledge.
