In a significant media appointment, Comrade Chidi Asonye, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Abia State Council, has been named the new Station Manager of ZikFm 96.3, Umuahia.
The announcement was made by Mazi Isaac Okoroafo, Chief Executive Officer of Communication Faculties Limited, the proprietors of the Igbo-speaking radio station. Okoroafo stated that the decision was based purely on merit and confidence in Asonye’s capabilities.
“I know you potentially have what it takes to do the job,” Okoroafo said, emphasizing that the appointment was made “not to please anyone.” He pledged to provide the new Station Manager with all necessary support to succeed, particularly as the station navigates the critical period leading up to the 2027 General Election.
Comrade Asonye brings over three decades of journalistic experience to the role. He joined the ZikFm team three years ago as a News Editor and Presenter, where he produced and hosted popular programs such as HooHaa, O Di Egwu, and Azum Ahia Di Ire.
His leadership credentials are extensive. Beyond his current role as Abia NUJ Chairman, Asonye is a member of the union’s National Executive Council and was the pioneer chairman of the Unity Federated Chapel in Abia. He is a known advocate for journalists’ welfare, improved working conditions, and stronger collaboration between the media and society.
Asonye is also recognized for his commitment to community development, having organized initiatives like the Abia NUJ Agric Show to promote food security and intellectual growth within the state.
This appointment positions a seasoned and respected media leader at the helm of ZikFm, signaling a new chapter for the station as it prepares to cover the evolving political and social landscape.
