Rising Fuel Prices: FENRAD Raises Alarm Over Inflation, Hardship on Vulnerable Nigerians

The Foundation for Environmental Rights Advocacy and Development (FENRAD), a leading environmental justice and public accountability organization, has expressed deep concern over the persistent increase in the pump price of petroleum products and the resulting inflationary pressures affecting Nigeria’s economy.

FENRAD noted that the steady rise in fuel prices has triggered a ripple effect on the cost of living, worsening poverty levels and placing significant strain on vulnerable groups such as women, children, low-income earners, and rural dwellers. The organization stressed that increased transportation costs have driven up the prices of essential goods and services, thereby eroding the purchasing power of ordinary Nigerians.

Speaking on the situation, the Executive Director of FENRAD, Comrade Nelson Nnanna Nwafor, lamented the growing inequality gap, noting that those already disadvantaged are bearing the brunt of the economic challenges. He warned that without urgent and targeted interventions, the situation could escalate into a more severe humanitarian and socio-economic crisis.

FENRAD, therefore, called on the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to take immediate and decisive steps to ease the hardship facing citizens.

The organization specifically urged the government to implement measures to stabilize fuel prices and address the rising inflation affecting basic commodities.

It also called for the swift rollout of mitigating policies following the removal of fuel subsidy, ensuring that relief measures reach the most vulnerable communities.

Additionally, FENRAD advocated for targeted social protection programmes, including transportation subsidies, food assistance, and direct cash transfers to cushion the impact on the poor.

The group further emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in the management of resources generated from subsidy removal, stressing that this is crucial to rebuilding public trust and ensuring equitable development.

FENRAD reiterated that economic reforms must be people-oriented, inclusive, and responsive to both social and environmental realities. It also urged government agencies, civil society groups, and development partners to work together in developing sustainable solutions that prioritize citizens’ welfare.

The organization reaffirmed its commitment to promoting environmental justice, economic equity, and accountable governance, pledging to continue monitoring developments and amplifying the concerns of affected communities.
