The Abia State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has deployed no fewer than 700 personnel across the state to ensure the safety of lives and property, particularly during the Easter festive season.
The State Commandant, Chukwuemeka Odimba, disclosed this on Friday during a press conference in Umuahia, urging residents to go about their normal activities without fear. He assured that the command has made adequate security arrangements for citizens and visiting dignitaries.
According to him, the personnel were drawn from various divisions, area commands, and tactical units, including the female squad, anti-vandal unit, counter-terrorism team, and VIP protection squad, all actively patrolling the state to guarantee a peaceful environment.
Odimba further revealed that the command recently received over 50 technology-driven ICT surveillance equipment, including drones, to enhance security operations. He noted that the devices are solar-powered and capable of transmitting real-time information from any part of the state.
He added that critical infrastructure such as hospitals, universities, government institutions, and hotels have been secured to prevent vandalism and other criminal activities during the period.
The commandant also disclosed that the corps recently arrested a high-profile suspect linked to the vandalism of agricultural equipment and other criminal activities.
He said investigations have been concluded and the suspect would soon be charged to court.
On school safety, Odimba stated that the NSCDC has intensified efforts to curb cultism, drug abuse, and other vices through its Safe School Initiative, with officers deployed to monitor activities and ensure students’ security.
He emphasized that the command is also tackling illegal mining and petroleum product diversion, noting that recent interventions have resolved disputes involving major companies and restored normal operations.
Odimba called for collaboration with traditional rulers, religious leaders, and other stakeholders to address insecurity through dialogue, sensitization, and rehabilitation, especially among youths involved in criminal activities, revealing that one 41 years Chinwendu Nwogu from Isialangwa North was arrested for his alleged involvement in the vandalism of Critical National Assets and Agro-allied facilities in the Ministry of Agriculture, Abia State. He said that investigation has been concluded and the culprit would be charged to court after Easter celebration.
He reaffirmed the corps’ commitment to working with other security agencies to maintain law and order, assuring residents of a safe and peaceful environment throughout the celebrations.
