ABIA NSCDC TRAINS HOMELAND SECURITY, VIGILANTE OPERATIVES FOR IMPROVED SECURITY

The Abia State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has commenced a seven-day capacity-building training for personnel of the Abia State Homeland Security Agency and the Abia State Vigilante Services.

Flagging off the training at the Command Headquarters Annex in Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, the State Commandant, CC Chukwuemeka N. Odimba, FCIA, KSM, JP, said continuous training and retraining were essential to improving the productivity and effectiveness of security personnel.

Odimba described the State Homeland Security Agency as a critical component of Abia’s security architecture, noting that, like the NSCDC, its operatives live within the communities and are therefore strategically positioned for effective intelligence gathering and surveillance.

He commended Governor Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, for his administration’s commitment to the capacity development of security personnel in the state, describing the investment as unprecedented and deliberate.

According to him, the government’s huge investment in security is already yielding positive results, as Abia continues to enjoy a peaceful and secure environment conducive to economic growth and development.

The Commandant also commended the resource persons and drill officers for their commitment to the training, saying the impact of their experience was already evident among the participants only two days into the exercise.

He urged them to sustain the tempo and ensure that the trainees derive maximum benefit from the programme.

Earlier, the Head of the Command’s Training Department, DCC Patrick Ayetan, read out the camp rules to the participants and urged them to comply with them, stressing that discipline remained fundamental to effective learning and adherence to standard operating procedures.

Also speaking, the Commander of the State Security Outfit, Mr Nzenwa Stanley Major, commended Governor Otti for his support for the Homeland Security Agency, including his approval of the training programme to enhance the capacity of its operatives.

Major equally praised the NSCDC for its commitment to strengthening the relatively young security outfit through regular training and retraining.

He pledged continued synergy between the Homeland Security Agency and the NSCDC, particularly in intelligence gathering, information sharing, and the protection of critical national assets and infrastructure.

He urged the operatives to take full advantage of the training opportunity to improve their professional capacity and effectiveness.

A total of 100 participants drawn from the Abia State Vigilante Services, Abia State Community Policing and Homeland Watch are participating in the training under the supervision of the Homeland Commander.

The State Commandant was accompanied by senior officers of the Corps during the official flag-off ceremony.

The NSCDC reiterated its commitment to supporting efforts aimed at maintaining a safe and crime-free society in Abia State.
