The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Abia State Command, and the Ministry of Power and Public Utilities have agreed on fresh strategies to tackle vandalism and safeguard critical public infrastructure across the state.
The resolution was reached during a meeting between the Abia State Commandant of NSCDC, CC Chukwuemeka N. Odimba, and the Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Hon. Ikechukwu Monday, at the commissioner’s office in Umuahia on Tuesday.
Speaking during the visit, Commandant Odimba noted that while incidents of vandalism had reduced significantly in recent times, the ever-evolving nature of crime required security agencies to continually review and strengthen their operational strategies.
He emphasized that the protection of critical national assets and infrastructure remains vital to economic growth and development, describing the fight against vandalism as a mission that must be won.
Head, Media and Public Relations Ndukwe Agu Egwu, Odimba commended the Ministry’s “Light Up Abia” initiative, describing it as a laudable project that complements the efforts of security agencies in combating crime across the state.

According to him, the installation of solar-powered streetlights has improved visibility and security in many communities, discouraging criminal activities and making it more difficult for miscreants to operate under the cover of darkness.
“As the solar-powered streetlights illuminate our environment, criminals are deterred from engaging in unlawful activities. These facilities must therefore be protected against vandalism to sustain the improved security being enjoyed in the state,” he said.
The NSCDC Commandant requested detailed information on major government infrastructure and their locations to enable the Corps strategically deploy personnel for their protection.
He also disclosed plans by the Command to disrupt illegal trading networks that encourage vandalism, particularly the transactions between suspected vandals and scrap dealers popularly known as “Ndi Akpakara.”
According to him, cutting off the market for stolen and vandalized materials would significantly reduce the incentive for such criminal activities.
Odimba further assured the Ministry of increased motorized patrols and surveillance operations around critical public infrastructure across the state.
Responding, Commissioner Ikechukwu Monday commended the NSCDC for its commitment to protecting lives and property and for its efforts in securing public assets across Abia State.
He agreed that cases of vandalism had declined considerably and urged the Corps to intensify its operations to consolidate and surpass the successes already recorded.
The Commissioner also reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to sustained collaboration with the NSCDC in ensuring the protection of critical infrastructure and the safety of residents.
The visit featured the presentation of a commemorative plaque to the Commissioner by the State Commandant, as well as a group photograph session.
The NSCDC reiterated its commitment to working with relevant stakeholders to maintain a crime-free society and ensure the protection of critical national assets and infrastructure in Abia State.
