The Forum of Former Deputy Governors of Nigeria says its forthcoming National Conference will address the growing disconnect between leadership and citizens, as well as the decline in family and societal values.
Chairman of the Forum, Dr Chris Akomas, disclosed this in Abuja after a meeting focused on preparations for the 2026 Annual National Conference.
Dr Akomas explained that the National Executive Council meeting, comprising the Board of Trustees and the Executive Committee, was part of the Forum’s regular activities to review its programmes and finalise arrangements for the conference.
The former Abia State Deputy Governor said the meeting was also aimed at ensuring that the conference would be impactful and effectively communicate its objectives to members, government and Nigerians.
He announced that the conference, scheduled for October 20 and 21, would be held under the theme, “Rethinking Nation Building: Bridging the Leadership-Citizen Disconnect Through Orientation, Attitude, Character, Culture and Tradition Towards Sustainable Development.”
According to Dr Akomas, the disconnect in Nigeria extends beyond the relationship between government and citizens to include families, communities and other aspects of national life.
He expressed concern over challenges such as drug abuse, addiction, the poor application of education and acquired skills, as well as the growing desire among some young people to make quick money.
The Forum chairman said these challenges reflected deeper societal problems that required attention, stressing the need to strengthen values, orientation and character as part of efforts towards sustainable national development.
