Gully erosion: Umuobia residents appeal for Govt’s intervention

Residents of Umuobia Housing Estate Olokoro in Umuahia South LGA of Abia have appealed to the state government under Governor Alex Otti to come to their aid over the erosion threatening the lives and properties in the community.

The residents including, Mrs Ndidi Nwosu and Professor Chris Chinaka who made the appeal, while conducting some journalists round the gully site, said if urgent steps are not taken by the government, the erosion menace will sack the residents who are predominantly retired civil servants.

According to Mrs Nwosu and Professor Chinaka over three buildings have already been pulled down by the gully, which they attributed to incessant flooding in the area caused by the dilapidated condition of the roads that leads to the Umuobia Housing Estate.
The resident called on the listening governor of the state, Dr Alex Otti, to come to their rescue and save them from further losing their houses to the gully.

Contributing, Mr Gilbert Nkenna whose house has been severely damaged by the gully, stressed the need for government intervention in rehabilitating the gully, pointing out that he has been rendered homes as a result of the gully which started in 2022.

Mr Nkenna further explained that the gully is beyond the financial scope of the residents.

some of the residents including Chuks Ibe and Nwamara Chekuwbe revealed that some of their neighbors have pocketed the sum of two hundred thousand naira meant for the erosion menace, which they denied as at press time.

But our correspondent who went further on the matter, disclosed that the money was given to Princewill Uka and Agbai Uko.
