The Minister of State, Science, Technology and Innovation, Chief Henry Ikoh says the efforts of National Root Crops Research Institute NRCRI Umudike is in line with the President Mohammed Buhari administration’s call to encourage Agriculture Based Economy and Industrialization.
Speaking during the official unveiling of a Proposed International Conference and E-learning Center and foundation laying ceremony as part of activities making the Institute Annual Research Review and Planning Workshop with the theme “Leveraging on Root and Tuber Crops for a More Resilient Agriculture Based Economy held at held at the Institute Library Complex Conference Hall.
According to Chief Ikoh, the project when completed will go a long way in assisting the Institute in their Research Programme and assured Professor Chiedozie Egesi of his support and that of Minister of Science Technology and Innovation, Mr Adeleke Mamora.
In his Address, the Executive Director National Root Crops Research Institute, Umudike, Professor Chiedozie Egesi said that the event which coincided with the unveiling of the Institute New Logo, Centennial Logo ceremony and exhibition of various Agriculture inputs varieties is aimed at reviewing the previous years research work accomplishment of the Institute as well as the way forward. Prof Egesi said that the Institute has trained over 250 Communities including farmers, Youths and Women on Agribusiness to boast food security in the Country, as well as thanked the Governor of Abia State, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu for providing an enabling environment for the Institute.

In his Key note address, Department of Agriculture and Industry, African Development Bank, Abidjan Cote D’Ivoire Professor Sule Ochai emphasized the need for Government at all levels to Empower Small Scale Farmers to enable them enhance their income generations, Productivity and grow the National Economy.
The Chairman on the Occasion who is also the Vice Chancellor Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike, MOUAU, Professor Maduebibisi Offor Iwe represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor ,Professor Udo Habert, Project Manager BASICS 2 Professor Later Sanni ,Dr Celestine Ikuenobe, Director Planning Monitoring and Evaluation NRCRI Umudike, Dr Tessy Ugo Madu and Eze Linus Onuoha described Root and Tuber Crops as the bedrock to revamp economy, sustain food security and commended Prof Egesi for his vision in the Institute.
