For years, residents of Olokoro Clan have continued to call for urgent attention to the infrastructural and economic challenges confronting their communities, particularly the poor condition of roads and bridges.
Among the major concerns are the collapsed bridge over Iyi Umudere and the deplorable condition of the Ahiaukwu–Umuajata Road, which residents say have continued to hinder movement and economic activities.
The bridge over Iyi Umudere, which connects Umudere and Umuajata to Amakama, Isiala Ngwa, and Umuahia metropolis, reportedly began showing signs of collapse before eventually giving way during the peak of the rainy season.
Following the collapse, four-wheeled vehicles and tricycles, popularly known as Keke, can no longer pass through the route, while bicycles, motorcycles, and pedestrians also face significant difficulties.
According to the statement, government officials and representatives from the State and Federal legislatures visited the site after the collapse and promised that action would be taken. However, the promised intervention is yet to materialise.
Similarly, the Ahiaukwu–Umuajata Road, described as a strategic link for residents of Umuajata, has remained in poor condition for an extended period.
The road reportedly becomes particularly difficult to navigate during the rainy season, forcing some cyclists to avoid it and others to charge higher fares for using the route.
The statement expressed concern that, despite Olokoro’s alleged overwhelming support for the Labour Party across various positions during the 2023 general elections, the people continue to face what it described as neglect.
It further alleged that while major infrastructural interventions are being carried out in some communities, Olokoro has largely received what the group termed “mere handouts” instead of substantial development projects.
The statement also noted that the Deputy Mayor of Umuahia South LGA and other Labour Party stakeholders of Olokoro extraction had spoken out and advocated for government intervention, particularly on the road challenges.
Against this backdrop, the Ifeanyichukwu Movement Media Team said Hon. Ifeanyichukwu Kingsley Ekwuribe has offered himself to represent the people of Umuahia South State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly.
The group urged residents to support Ekwuribe, whom it described as qualified to speak on behalf of the constituency and advocate for improved infrastructure and economic development.
It said his candidacy provides an opportunity for the people to demand stronger representation and renewed attention to their needs.
