NRC Partners South-East Governors To Reclaim Railway Right Of Way

The District Manager, Eastern District of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Mr. Ogbuehi Francis Ezuike, says the corporation is partnering governors in the South-East to reclaim encroached railway right of way across the zone.

Speaking while inspecting the ongoing recovery of the railway corridor along Amuzukwu Umuwaya Road in Umuahia, Mr. Ezuike disclosed that the Federal Government is making efforts to restore railway transportation in the South-East.

He explained that work will soon begin on the extension of the railway line from Aba to Enugu, and commended the state government for its support in ensuring that encroached sections of the railway are reclaimed.
Mr. Ezuike noted that the corporation has continued to sensitise the public against erecting structures or trading on railway right of way, describing such practices as unacceptable.

Also speaking, the General Manager of the Umuahia Capital Development Authority, Mr. Kingsley Agomoh, said the state maintains a cordial relationship with the Nigerian Railway Corporation and is working towards a seamless transport system, including the new bus terminal and the planned extension of the railway terminal to the facility in Umuahia.

Mr. Agomoh stated that the recovery of the railway right of way will stretch from ShopRite to Aba Park in Umuahia, with the corridor to be beautified to enhance the aesthetics of the state capital.

He added that Okigwe Park has been designated as a temporary relocation site for traders around Isi Gate pending the completion of the new market at Afaraukwu Ibeku.

In her remarks, the Railway Property Manager, Umuahia, Mrs. Ifeanyi Patience, expressed satisfaction with the ongoing recovery of railway property in Aba, noting that some encroached areas had been illegally sold and developed with permanent structures.

She commended Alex Otti for the ongoing infrastructural development in the state, which she said has elevated its status.

Correspondents report that the District Manager was also conducted round key locations, including the proposed railway park site.
