The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Abia State Chapter, has congratulated Nigerians on the occasion of the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, urging citizens to uphold the principles of inclusion, accountability, participation, and equal opportunity in the nation’s democratic process.
In a statement issued by the Chairperson of Abia NAWOJ, Ambassador Norah Okafor, the association noted that Democracy Day provides an opportunity not only to celebrate Nigeria’s democratic journey but also to reflect on the values that strengthen democratic governance.
According to Okafor, democracy flourishes when every citizen is given the opportunity to participate in decision-making processes, stressing that women must continue to be actively involved in shaping policies and decisions that affect society.
She reaffirmed the association’s commitment to advocating for the empowerment of women and promoting their participation in politics, governance, and leadership positions. She emphasized that women possess the competence, capacity, and vision required to contribute significantly to national development.
The NAWOJ Chairperson further called for increased support, mentorship, and opportunities for women, noting that greater inclusion would encourage more women to seek elective positions, assume leadership roles, and influence policies that impact communities across the country.
Okafor also highlighted the critical role of journalists in sustaining democracy, stating that women journalists remain committed to upholding the ethics of the profession through fairness, accuracy, objectivity, and responsible reporting.
She explained that ethical journalism plays a vital role in promoting informed civic participation, giving voice to marginalized groups, and strengthening democratic institutions.
As Nigeria marks Democracy Day, Abia NAWOJ called on citizens to work collectively towards building a society where women are empowered, democratic ideals are protected, and the media continues to serve as a reliable pillar of truth, transparency, and accountability.
The association wished Nigerians a happy Democracy Day celebration and prayed for continued peace, progress, and prosperity for Abia State and the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
