From Abandoned Classrooms to Global Champions: How Gov. Alex Otti Restored the Glory of Abia Public Schools

On *October 5, 2026, while addressing teachers at the World Teachers’ Day celebration in Umuahia, Governor Dr. Alex C. Otti, OFR, made a statement that captured the very heart of his vision for Abia State:

“The most valuable resource Abia possesses is not buried beneath its soil, but seated every morning in its classrooms.”

This is not just a beautiful quote. It is the living blueprint of an education revolution that is currently rewriting the story of public schooling in Nigeria.

To truly appreciate the magnitude of Abia’s recent educational triumphs, we must first remember the grim reality of the past. Not long ago, public schools in Abia were in a sorry state. Buildings were falling apart, classrooms were dangerously overcrowded, and teachers were deeply demoralized because they were owed months of salaries. Parents who could afford it ran to private schools, leaving public education as a last resort for the poor. The system had lost its glory.

But when Governor Otti took over in 2023, he did not just promise small, temporary fixes. He started a total rebuild.

First, he made basic education free and compulsory so that no child would stay at home simply because their parents lacked money.
Furthermore, to ensure no child is left behind, the Governor has aggressively expanded the teaching workforce. Building on the successful recruitment of 5,394 teachers in 2025, in 2026, he approved the recruitment of an additional 4,075 teachers. These new teachers have already been posted to remote and rural areas with an additional rural allowance for them to ensure no Abia child, whether in the city or the village, is deprived of the right to quality education. This strategic expansion is deliberately targeted at bridging the rural-urban divide, ensuring that a child in a remote village has access to the same quality of STEM-focused instruction as a child in Umuahia or Aba.

Infrastructure has also received decisive attention. The government is not merely constructing new facilities; it is breathing new life into existing ones. Currently, 221 public schools are at various stages of comprehensive retrofitting, complemented by the development of 20 state-of-the-art Smart Schools. These modern learning environments, equipped with interactive digital boards and ICT laboratories, are shifting the focus from rote memorization to critical thinking and discovery.

To protect these investments, the Governor has also deployed the State’s Homeland Security Services to public schools, effectively curbing vandalism and securing the learning environment.

However, buildings and books are only half the story. The true heart of any school is its teachers. Thus, the Governor himself launched an unprecedented offensive on teacher welfare and capacity building. At the 2026 World Teachers’ Day celebration in Umuahia, he sent a resounding message of appreciation by announcing a monumental ₦1 Billion Teachers’ Appreciation Fund, to be shared equally among every teacher in the state.
Beyond this historic financial gesture, he tackled systemic frustrations head-on. He issued express approvals to resolve outstanding promotions from 2021 and 2022, mandated the immediate payment of all salary claims for newly recruited teachers, and, in a masterstroke of institutional memory preservation, ordered the immediate recall and reintegration of qualified teachers who had been prematurely retired under the old 60-year threshold, following the extension of the retirement age to 65.

The results of these bold actions are no longer just promises; they are hard, undeniable facts.

Domestically, Abia State has retained the number one position in the 2026 National Examinations Council (NECO) ranking, recording an outstanding 81.78% pass rate. With 9,666 out of 11,820 candidates securing at least five credits, including English Language and Mathematics, Abia has outperformed the national average by more than 23 percentage points for the second consecutive year.

Internationally, the crown jewel of this revolution was unveiled in Doha, Qatar. Team Abia, comprising brilliant minds from the state’s public schools, emerged as the Overall Champions at the 2026 International Schools Debate Championship. Competing against elite students from six countries, including Jordan, India, and Qatar, the Abia contingent claimed the tournament’s biggest prize: Best International School Debate Team, alongside the Overall Best Team (Junior Category), Best Leadership Award, Best Debater Award, and 12 additional laurels.

This historic victory shattered the long-held, erroneous assumption that public school students cannot compete on the global stage. It proved that when you equip young minds with knowledge, confidence, and unwavering government support, they will not only represent Nigeria; they will conquer the world.
Governor Alex Otti’s education agenda is a masterclass in compassionate and strategic leadership. He has successfully transformed Abia’s public schools from neglected facilities into competitive hubs of intellectual excellence. The trophies in Doha and the top NECO rankings are not the finish line; they are the ultimate proof that his policies work.
When a leader invests heavily in capable teachers, modern infrastructure, and the limitless potential of the youth, the world inevitably takes notice. Governor Otti has blown the trumpet of educational renewal in Abia State, and the music is undeniable. By choosing to prioritize the intellect and welfare of its people, this administration is not just fixing schools it is building the unshakable foundation for a prosperous, innovative, and globally competitive Abia for generations to come.
