The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Abia State Command, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, with Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba, for the training of the institution’s internal security operatives.
The State Commandant of the Corps, Commandant Chukwuemeka Odimba, disclosed this in Aba on Thursday, September 17, 2026, after a meeting with the Rector of the Polytechnic, Professor Christopher Okoro Kalu.
According to the Head of Media and Public Relations of the Command, CSC Ndukwe Agu Egwu, the meeting was convened to formalise the agreement and commence the capacity-building programme for the internal security personnel attached to the institution.
Speaking after the signing of the MoU, the Rector, Professor Christopher Okoro Kalu, said the Executive Governor of Abia State, Dr Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, had approved the training of the institution’s internal security operatives.
Professor Kalu expressed appreciation to the Governor for the approval and commended the NSCDC for its efforts towards providing adequate security to create a conducive environment for learning and other productive activities within the Polytechnic.
He also appealed to the NSCDC State Command to consider extending similar security training programmes to other tertiary institutions in the state, including Abia State University, Uturu; College of Education Technical, Arochukwu; and College of Health Technology, Aba.
The Rector said such training would contribute to maintaining a peaceful and secure learning environment across institutions of higher learning in Abia State.
Responding, Commandant Odimba commended Governor Otti for approving the programme, describing him as a security-friendly Governor.
He said the Abia State Government had prioritised the training and retraining of security personnel to enhance their capacity and enable them to perform their responsibilities effectively.
The NSCDC Commandant assured the Rector that the training would go beyond basic security knowledge, as participants would also be exposed to the use of modern technology-driven security devices.
He added that the programme would cover issues relating to illicit drug peddling and consumption, their implications for crime, possible remedies, as well as general rules of engagement.
Commandant Odimba said the training would be conducted thoroughly and advised participants to approach it with seriousness, stressing that only those who successfully complete the programme would be issued certificates.
The Commandant also inspected some of the facilities to be used for the training alongside the institution’s Chief Security Officer before returning to the Command Headquarters in Umuahia.
Meanwhile, Commandant Odimba commended the Commandant-General of the NSCDC, Professor Ahmed Abubakar Audi, mni, OFR, for strengthening the capacity of training departments across state commands.
He said the Abia Command’s Training Department had remained active in training and retraining personnel since his assumption of office and was prepared to undertake the new assignment in line with the mandate of the Corps.
He expressed optimism that the initiative would further contribute to sustaining the relative peace and security enjoyed in Abia State.
The State Commandant was accompanied by senior officers of the Command during the meeting and inspection of the training facilities.
The NSCDC reaffirmed its commitment to supporting a safe and secure environment for learning and other legitimate activities across the state.
