The Chairman, Abia State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Comrade Victor Ndukwe has Commended the Nigerian Red Cross Society for their humanitarian services over the years which has helped in preserving lives and promoting better health care services.
Comrade Ndukwe who made the commendation when he played host to a delegation from the Abia State branch of the Nigerian Red Cross Society at the NUJ Press Centre, Umuahia, who came on an advocacy visit, recalled the life saving role of the International Red Cross Society during the Nigerian civil war stressing that there is the need to device means of tackling local challenges posing threat to efficient health care delivery.
The Abia NUJ Chairman who described the visit as timely, tasked them to reach out to every sector of the society on the specific roles expected of them to forestall the endangering the lives of health care givers, harped on the need for proper collaboration of all in achieving a better society where everyone is safe and assured that Journalists in the State will continue to discharge their duties professionally and are open to partner any segment of the society for better results
Earlier, the Leader of the delegation and Abia State branch Secretary of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Mr Ugwunna Ugwueje said they called on the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists Abia State Council as part of their State-wide enlightenment campaign to educate people on the things jeopardizing health care delivery and solicited the cooperation of the state NUJ as a critical stakeholder to make the health care environment safe to enable the care givers to perform freely and optimally.
Contributing, the Health Coordinator and State Focal Person, Health Care in Danger Programme, Mr Ijeoma Akahara while identifying insecurity as one of the major challenges affecting the optimal performance of health care providers in the country, commended the role of the media in educating and mobilizing society into positive action and called for their support towards the realization of the aim of the Health Care in Danger Programme.
In their separate remarks, the State Communications Officer of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Charity Ekeoma and the State Finance and Administration Officer, Mrs MaryClara Ogechi- Chilaka appreciated the Abia NUJ for their favourable disposition and warm reception accorded them.
Highlight of the visit was the presentation of some literatures of the Nigerian Red Cross Society by the team leader to the NUJ Chairman.
