Agencies Partners in Sensitising Students on Child Rights, under GC7 Grant

As part of efforts in acquainting Abia’ students and children with their rights, and to understand when their rights are being violated, the National Human Rights Commission in collaboration with the Ministry of Justice has embarked on enlightenment advocacy to students in Abia State, under GC7 grant, NEPHWAN CLM CBOs,s Greater Women Initiative for Health and Rights, Victorian Clarion Foundation, SYNERGY FOR HEALTH RIGHT EDUCATION.

Speaking at the sensitization program aimed at educating students on their fundamental rights, the facilitators and Assistant Director of Investigation in the National Human Rights Commission, Abia State, Mrs Ukachi Uka, described such engagement as imperative, as it will enhance the students’ boldness to speak out when their rights are being violated.

She extolled the global fund for its sponsorship, on the gender and human rights advocacy as well as Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS Abia State, CBO,s, Greater Women Initiative, and Victorian Clarion, stressing that the program will enlighten the students about, human rights, referred to as basic rights and freedoms to which all human beings are entitled to as well as existing child rights laws.

Mrs Uka enumerated rights of the child to include the right to survive and development, the right to education, right to health among others, while legal instruments for the protection of the child rights include the CRA, CRL 2004, CFRN 1999 as amended amongst others.

Also speaking a Senior State Counsel in the Ministry of Justice Ezetah Agbogo, pointed out that the sensitisation and advocacy program will enable the students to know their rights and report rights violations, to the relevant authorities.

In his remarks the principal of Mayfair secondary school World Bank Housing Estate Umuahia Mr Timothy Nwachukwu thanked National Human Rights Commission Abia’, NEPWHAN Abia’ team, global fund and CBO, Greater Women initiative for Health and Rights,, SHRE, VICLAF for the sensitization and advocacy visit which according to him has enlightened the students and young ones, on what is their rights and the need to report to the authorities when their rights are being violated.

In his remarks, the principal of Mayfair Secondary School World Bank Housing Estate Umuahia Mr Timothy Nwachukwu thanked Global, IHVN, NEPWHAN and the CBOs under the CLM component of GC7 for collaborating with the National Human Rights Commission and Ministry of Justice in bringing Gender and Human Rights awareness to the students, describing the gesture as commendable and impactful.
